How styled text works on X
A post on X is plain Unicode text, and each reader's app picks the typeface. The 16 styles here use look-alike letters, most of them from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block. They are characters, not formatting, so they keep their look in a post, a reply, a bio, or a display name.
X counts characters by public rules: Latin letters count 1, and most characters from later Unicode blocks count 2. Styled letters are in those later blocks, so โHelloโ in bold takes 10 of the 280 characters of a post. The name and the bio have their own limits, 50 and 160, and styled letters fill them twice as fast.
Style one word
One bold word draws the eye. A bold paragraph is hard to read, costs twice the characters, and does not match a search.
Leave your name searchable
The people in your niche type your name to find you. X search does not match a styled name, and the 50-character limit fills twice as fast.
Test it in a draft first
Some phone fonts lack a styled letter and show an empty box in its place. Paste the line into an X draft and look at it before it goes out.
Underline and strikethrough
Both styles put a combining mark after each character. X counts each mark as 1, so an underlined word is twice its plain length.
Questions
How does a font generator for X work?
Each letter you type maps to a Unicode code point with a fixed look. โ๐โ (U+1D401) is its own character, not a โBโ with bold applied. The look is part of the character, so X keeps it when you paste.
Can I use these styles in my X name and bio?
Both fields accept them, within their limits: 50 characters for the name and 160 for the bio. Most styled letters count 2, so a styled name holds about 25 letters. Keep the words people search for, such as your role or your niche, in plain letters.
Is styled text bad for accessibility?
It can be. A screen reader announces some styled letters by their Unicode name, such as โmathematical bold capital Hโ, and skips others. Use a style for a label or one word, and write the key fact of a post in plain letters.
Does X search find styled words?
No. Search matches the characters you typed, and a styled โBโ is not the character โBโ. A post or a name written in a style does not show up when someone searches for the plain word.
Why does styled text use more characters?
X counts each character by where it sits in Unicode. Plain Latin letters count 1. Most styled letters come from later blocks, which count 2. So a 140-character line in bold takes all 280 characters of a post. The number beside each style is its length on X.
Why do some characters stay plain?
Unicode has no styled version of every character. Italic, script, and fraktur have no digits, and no style covers accented letters such as โรฉโ. The tool leaves those characters as they are, and the same goes for emoji and punctuation.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. This page converts the text on your device. Nothing goes to Reachr, and nothing is stored.
