Count characters with X’s own weights.
A link is 23 and an emoji is 2. Text past 280 gets a mark, so you see what to cut before you post.

What each character costs on X
On X, a character is not always 1. Each kind of character has a weight, set in X’s developer docs. The counter above applies those weights to each key press.
Letters, digits, spaces: 1
A Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, or Hebrew letter is 1. A digit, a space, a punctuation mark, and a line break are 1 each too.
Links: 23
Before a post goes out, X swaps each link for a t.co address of 23 characters. A 120-character article link and a 15-character home page both cost 23.
Emoji: 2
One emoji is 2. Some emoji are built from several code points, for example a flag or a hand with a skin tone, but X still charges 2 for each.
Chinese, Japanese, Korean: 2
Each of these characters counts 2, so a post in these scripts holds 140 of them.
Reply names: 0
The @names that X puts at the start of a reply do not count. An @name that you type into the text counts like other text.

Questions
What is the tweet character limit?
280 characters for an account without Premium, counted with X's weights. A link counts 23 and an emoji 2, so a post with two links has 234 characters left for text. A post in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean holds 140 characters, because each one counts 2.
What is the X Premium character limit?
25,000 characters, for a post, a reply, or a quote. Everyone can read a long post, but only Premium accounts can write one. On the timeline, X shows the first 280 characters and puts the rest behind "Show more", so most readers see only the first 280. Put the point there. X's own scheduler cannot schedule a long post yet.
What is the X bio character limit?
160 characters. The display name above your @handle takes 50, and the handle itself 15. This counter weighs a bio and a name with the same rules as a post, so a link in a bio counts 23 here.
Do links count toward the limit?
Yes, at a fixed price. X replaces each link with a t.co address of 23 characters, so the real length of the link does not matter. Two links take 46 of your 280.
Do @mentions count in a reply?
Not the ones at the start. Since March 2017, X shows the names of the people in a reply above the text, and they do not count toward the limit. An @mention that you type into the text counts like other text.
Why does this count differ from other counters?
A plain counter adds 1 for each character. X adds 23 for a link, and 2 for an emoji or a Chinese, Japanese, or Korean character. This counter uses the weights X publishes for developers. One known gap: a bare link with an uncommon ending, for example "site.berlin", counts here as text. Add "https://" and it counts as a link.
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. The counter runs in your browser. Reachr never receives your text and keeps nothing.
Write it once. Reachr posts it on time.
Reachr scores each draft before it goes out, then schedules it and publishes it on X at your best times. You decide what goes out.
