Why engagement bait costs more than it gets
X ranks each post by the reactions it expects from readers, and the weights are public. A like adds 0.66 and a repost adds 1.0. A mute takes off 58.8 and a report takes off 234. So one mute cancels the likes of about 90 readers. A post that begs gets skipped and muted, and a like that came from an ask tells you nothing about the post.
X's platform manipulation and spam policy covers inauthentic engagement: activity that makes an account or a post look more popular than it is. This checker does not judge a post against that policy. It marks the lines that readers take as begging, and it sorts them into seven kinds.
Like or repost ask
Asks for a like or a repost that the post did not earn. Cut it. End with a question people can answer in a few words.
“Like if you agree”, “RT if this is you”, “Smash that like button”
Vote by button
Turns the like and repost buttons into a poll. Ask it as a question: “A or B? Which one and why?” Or use an X poll.
“Like for Notion, repost for Obsidian”, “❤️ for cats, 🔁 for dogs”
Empty comment ask
Asks for a word or an emoji, not for a thought. Ask what you want to know: “What was your first paid channel?”
“Comment YES for part 2”, “Drop a 🔥 if you ship on Fridays”
Tag ask
Asks readers to bring other people in. Cut it. Make the post worth sending without the ask.
“Tag a friend who needs this”, “Tag 3 founders who should read this”
Follow ask
Asks for a follow before the reader gets any value. Cut it. Say what you post about in your bio.
“Follow for more”, “Make sure to follow so you don't miss it”
Save or send ask
Asks for a save or a share that the post did not earn. Cut it. Give one fact worth keeping, and readers save the post without an ask.
“Share this with a founder friend”, “Bookmark this for later”
Link behind a reply (grey area)
A link behind a reply. Some readers like it, and many see a funnel. Put the link in the first reply, or say what is in it.
“Comment GUIDE and I'll DM it to you”, “Reply ‘prompts’ for the full list”
A post with no bait can still sound like a template. The AI writing checker marks the stock words and lines. The viral post checker tests the first line, the detail, and how much the post invites a reply.
Questions
What is engagement bait?
Engagement bait is a line that asks for a reaction that the post did not earn: “Like if you agree”, “Like for A, repost for B”, “Comment YES”, “Tag a friend”, “Follow for more”. The reader taps, but the tap tells you nothing about the post.
Does X rank engagement bait lower?
The checker makes no claim that a post breaks X's rules. X's public ranking code shows the cost of a bad reaction: a mute is −58.8 and a report is −234, and a like is +0.66. A reader who feels baited can mute you, and one mute costs more than the likes that the ask gets.
Is “Comment GUIDE and I'll DM you” bait?
It is a grey area. Some readers want the file and are glad to reply. Many readers see a funnel, and a thread of one-word replies looks farmed. The checker marks the line in grey and does not count it as bait. The plain fix is to put the link in the first reply.
What should I ask instead?
Ask a real question that a reader can answer in a few words from their own work: “Which tool do you use for invoices?” A reply with a thought in it starts a conversation, and X's ranker weighs a reply at 5.0 and a like at 0.66.
Why did the checker miss a line, or mark a plain one?
The checker uses a fixed list of patterns. A new phrasing can get past it, and a plain sentence can match by accident. Read each mark and make the decision. Click a find to select it in your text.
Does Reachr keep my post?
No. The check runs in your browser, so your post does not go to a server. Reachr gets nothing and stores nothing.
Replies from the right people, with no ask.
Reachr finds the people on X who describe the problem your product solves, and it drafts the reply. It scores your own drafts and flags bait before a post goes out. You approve each post, and Reachr schedules and publishes it.
